Take up sports, cut down on medical bills, says SAAP chief

Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh Chairman P.R. Mohan on Friday asked the students to pursue sports along with education to lead a fruitful and healthy life.

Speaking at the two-day UGC national seminar on personality development through sports at Siddhartha Auditorium here, he said indulgence in sports helped youngsters maintain sound health and one can reduce the family medical expenditure to a great extent.

He said that the Central Government was planning to introduce physical education as one of the subjects in the regular curriculum.

“It has also announced Rs. 25 crores towards Yoga education in educational institutions which will do a whale of good to the youngsters in helping them emerge as strong citizens.”

The organisers felicitated chess Grandmaster M.R. Lalith Babu, a former student of Siddhartha Arts and Science College, who won a bronze medal in the recently-concluded Commonwealth Chess Championship in New Delhi.

Personality development

Former director of Physical Education SK University P. Chinnappa Reddy, in his keynote address, highlighted the nuances of personality development through sports.

In the technical session, Yoga guru from Hyderabad K. Aruna Devi highlighted the Yoga’s contribution in maintaining good health and prevention of certain ailments. She also suggested asanas and meditation techniques.

Mr. K. Arun Babu, Yoga course in-charge, Acharya Nagarjuna University, explained the stress- relieving techniques through Yoga.

Mr. Ch. VST Saikumar, principal, Maruthi College of Physical Education, Coimbatore, Prof. Sebastian, RMV Mission University, Coimbatore, delivered talks on sports, socialisation and sports training.

The inaugural session was presided by Siddhartha Arts and Science College principal M.V.N. Padma Rao. Organising secretary N. Srinivas Rao proposed vote of thanks.
