Underlining the need to speed up the justice delivery system, Gareeb Guide International members took out a padayatra in the city on Saturday.
Visakhapatnam-based Supreme Court lawyer D.V. Rao has taken up a Statewide padayatra at Vizianagaram and proposes to end it in Hyderabad, creating awareness en route among people, political leaders, and those related to the judicial system about the need for having more number of judges.
Mr. Rao said 30 million cases were pending in courts and, in 2002, the Supreme Court and the Central government had decided that there should be 50 judges for every 10 lakh population. Currently, India has only 15.
YSRCP leader L. Venugopala Rao, activist Jampa Krishna Kishore, and several lawyers walked from the Sub-Collector’s Office on the MG Road to the Civil Courts as part of the padayatra.
In 2006, Janhit Manch proposed to Prashant Bhushan, a senior advocate of the Supreme Court, to file a PIL on the issue, mainly for clearing the backlog.
However, the PIL was not filed in the name of Forum for Fast Justice. The origin of the PIL can be traced to the project Save Judiciary – Save Nation, conceptualised by Janhit Manch.
