Hundreds of students of Nellore Ravindra Bharathi School organised a rally to enlighten the public to celebrate ‘Eco-Friendly Diwali’ here on Tuesday.
The students and staff carrying placards, raised slogans against air, water, sound and environment pollution. The slogans – ‘Don’t create sound pollution’, ‘Create green environment’, ‘Keep water clean in canals and rivers’, ‘Air, Water and Environment pollution may cause hazards’ – impressed the public.
A student Deepthi said burning crackers would create pollution and was not safe for children. “We request the children not to waste money and damage our eco-system”, the class IX student said.
School principal P. Suma Kiran said the programme was aimed at enlightening the students on safety and celebrating Diwali with diyas.
“Diwali is a festival of colourful diyas. We request the people to celebrate the festival by lighting earthen lamps, decorating the houses, perform pujas and exchange sweets. But, crackers will create environmental pollution,” said another student Sai.
Later, the students gave tips to the public on celebrating the festival safely. School Zonal in-charge Mahesh, assistant general manager Srikanth and other staff participated.
Several schools in the city organised Deepavali celebrations ahead of the festival.
