It’s summer vacation and people along with their children choose to enjoy it in different ways.

While a few families prefer to visit religious and tourist places in the country and abroad, others opt to send their children to summer camps to undergo training in music, computer and personality development courses. But a majority of the students, these days, are honing their driving skills at sprawling PWD Grounds on Bandar Road here.

Right from the dawn, scores of students, especially girls, are thronging PWD Grounds to learn driving. Some prefer to learn two-wheeler riding, while others want to undergo training in driving cars.

Owners of driving schools said at least 15 people were coming to learn driving each day as against half-a-dozen persons who used to come before the commencement of summer.

Apart from Intermediate, degree and engineering students, working women, especially nurses and housewives, are evincing interest in learning driving.

Driving modules

The craze for honing driving skills has gone up considerably in the last few days and the number of people opting for the classes may increase further during the next few weeks after completion of other competitive exams, said V. Rama Tulasi of New Wave Driving School. She said short and long term driving modules were introduced for the convenience of students.

“We are charging Rs. 1,000 for short-term and Rs. 2,000 for long-term training module. Following requests from students, we are also giving discounts,” she said adding those who are expert in pedalling bicycle can learn driving quickly.

In case of two-wheeler riding, focus would be mainly laid on using accelerator, applying brakes and driving near curves.

“Once learners become perfect with basics, we will train them in driving along with pillion rider to boost their confidence,” Ms. Tulasi said. In case of driving a car, trainers lay emphasis on controlling steering, besides the use of accelerator and when to apply brakes.

“We also guide them about procedure that should be followed to secure licence after completing training,” she added.
