Counselling for admissions into Engineering, Agricultural and Food Technology courses (EAMCET) began here on Monday amid protests from supporters agitating against the bifurcation of the State. With the non-teaching staff members staying away from the duties, it was left to faculty members to complete the verification of certificates. A handful of student activists under the aegis of Student JAC staged a sit-in at the Government Women’s College. They were rounded up by the police.
District Collector S. Suresh Kumar reviewed the arrangements and instructed the police to provide adequate security for the students and the parents.
At Government Women’s Polytechnic College at Gujjangundla, counselling was suspended after the teaching and non-teaching members decided to boycott the counselling.
In the Government Women’s College in Guntur, a large number of students and their parents waited patiently as the counselling which was to begin from 9.30 a.m. was delayed for about two hours. In-charge principal of Government Women’s College, B.S Bramarambha sought the assistance of senior faculty members to complete the verification of certificates. Taking the help of a couple of computer operators, the staff members began the counselling at about 11.30 a.m.
Coordinator, S. Mutha Reddy said that verification of certificates of more than 200 students has been completed according to the latest reports from the counselling centre.
“There is a lot of rush here since the counselling at Polytechnic College was suspended. We are trying to cope up with the rush by using the services of faculty members drawn from various colleges,” said Dr. Reddy. The verification would be continued for three days and the students would have to choose the colleges later. Students have to submit their original certificates during the verification.
