As part of its proactive policing, the State government on Saturday launched a DNA Index System, claimed to be the first such system commissioned by any State in the country for the purpose of human identification. It uses the latest DNA technology tool Rapid HIT DNA system developed by Integen X Inc. USA.

Launched by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu here on Saturday, the Rapid HIT technology generates DNA profiles from live samples such as oral swabs, blood stains, saliva etc., in less than two hours compared to at least two days required by other available technologies.

Mr. Naidu said his aim was to make Andhra Pradesh a crime-free State in the country through the use of latest technology in forensic labs and that he had directed for immediate introduction of the system.

Integen X senior executive Anand Gupta said DNA profiling plays a crucial role not only in solving crimes but also has a potential to link a series of crimes to suspects. The guilt or innocence of the suspects could be established definitively with the help of the technology.

A pilot project was initiated involving the first batch of convicts and suspects involved in various cases, to demonstrate the efficacy of the system by generating their DNA profiles.

Deputy Chief Minister N. Chinarajappa, Director General of Police N. Sambasiva Rao, Advisor to the Government on Forensics Gandhi P.C. Kaza and Roy Swiger, a former officer of the Florida Police Department, were present.
