Stage set for big-ticket boxing championship

Bhimavaram, the bustling town of West Godavari, is all set to host the National Youth Boxing Championship for under-18 boys at the Cosmopolitan Club from February 19 to 23.

The mega boxing event is organised by the Andhra Pradesh Boxing Association for the first time and with financial support from Mr. G. Rama Raju (Ramu), president, Cosmopolitan Club.

Nearly 250 pugilists from 28 States will be seen in action during the championship. As many as 60 technical officials will conduct the event.

“Apart from officials, we are expecting members and office bearers of the State units and from the Indian Boxing Federation to witness the bouts,” Mr. Krishna Babu said. The bouts will be held from light fly (49 Kg) to super heavy weight (91 plus).

A boxing ring has been spruced up at a cost of Rs. 3.4 lakhs and it will be inaugurated by West Godavari District Collector K. Bhaskar.

“We are offering free lodging and boarding to all boxers and other officials at the club premises,” Mr Babu added.

The following boxers - V. Jyoti Swaroop, E.L.G. Kiran Yadav, P. Appala Raju, V. Avinash, N. Harikrishna, R. Sricharan, P. Naveen, Sk. Yaseen, P. Vasu and Ch. Mahesh – will represent Andhra Pradesh.
