Stadium comes alive with ‘Olympics’

Coaches, who supervised the “Olympics” organised by the Rotary Club of Mid Town as part club’s youth activities, were a happy lot as they witnessed overwhelming turnout of athletes from various schools both corporate and municipal.

“Over 1,250 youngsters representing events like 100m, 800m, long jump, shot put and other games is an encouraging sign as we can identify future faces of Andhra Pradesh,” said senior Sports Authority of India (SAI) coach Vinayak Prasad, who produced several international and national athletes.

The Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium enthusiastic witnessed youngsters showcasing their raw talent both in athletics and games such as volleyball, basketball, lawn tennis and cricket.

As many as 24 schools took part in the “Olympics” which were held separately for civic and corporate schools in under-14 and under-17 segments for boys and girls. Setting the track ablaze in the 100-metre race in the boys section (under-17) was B. Srikanth of Nalanda Public School while D.N.V.S. Keerthika of V. P. Siddhartha Public School piped the tape in the girls’ category. In competitions for municipal schools, B. Rajesh (Bishop) and D. Lahari of AKTP High School took the top honours.

In the under-14 segment, K. Durga Prasad and Durga Bhavani of Care and Share ion the honours in the 100m dash while for the corporate schools M. Bablu and K.H.Tanya, both K.C.H Siddhartha grabbed the first places.

The event was inaugurated by Life Insurance of Corporation of India Senior Divisional Manager J. Raja Rao. Rotary International Governor Mohan Prasad also visited the venue.

The event had all the frills of an “Olympics” with athletes taking out a torch run signifying the spirit of sportsmanship.
