Collector cautions ryots against patronising the nursery under scanner
Officials of Agriculture Department seized 1,688 packets of spurious Bt cotton seeds in a nursery owned by Sai Krishna Traders at Perecherla village in Medikonduru mandal on Saturday during raids led by District Collector B Ramanjaneyulu and Joint Collector A Sarath. The stock is valued at nearly Rs.15 lakh.
On the occasion, Mr. Ramanjaneyulu told mediapersons that Sai Krishna Traders supplied the sub-standard seeds in other districts also under various brand names. He cautioned the farmers against buying seeds from the above nursery as they could incur heavy losses.
Information about the racket was passed on to the officials concerned in all other districts to mitigate the loss likely to be caused by the spurious stuff.
The Collector seized the records of Sai Krishna Traders and got its retail outlet at Rajagarithota closed. He said spurious seeds of different crops worth about Rs 40 lakh were seized in the last couple of weeks. Taking action under the Preventive Detention Act against those marketing spurious seeds was being contemplated, he added. Joint Director of Agriculture I Ramakrishna Murthy and others were present.
