‘Spiritual growth can be achieved only by virtues'

December 10, 2010 03:23 pm | Updated 03:23 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Lasting happiness can be attained only by making others happy and eternal happiness can be attained by self knowledge.

Chinmaya Mission works to help people attain lasting and eternal happiness, said the Mission's worldwide head Swami Tejomayananda here on Thursday.

The swami, who became head of the Mission after the passing of the founder Chinmayananda, was here to inaugurate a building constructed to house a centre of the Mission in Suryaraopet.

In a discourse delivered after the inauguration, he said that there could be “several activities that give temporary happiness to us, but lasting happiness could be attained only by giving others happiness.”

He said that buildings by themselves do not help people gain self knowledge of happiness and every member and mission worker should strive to make the centre into an “ashram”. The regular Vedanta classes that would be conducted should kindle love for god in the hearts of the people so that they could in turn render service to humanity. He said spiritual growth could be achieved by attaining knowledge and virtues, but not by amassing material wealth. “We cannot buy god with wealth, we can only buy a picture of god at the most,” he said.
