A 3-year old girl Bujji from Piduguralla, who has been affected by spinal tuberculosis, has been given a new lease of life following a spinal surgery conducted by Naresh Babu, spine surgeon from Mallika Spine Centre here.
Dr. Naresh Babu helped the girl to stand on her own feet by fixing the vertebral bones with screws and rods.
The girl, who has become paralytic due to hunch back deformity, was operated successfully on June 28.
The operation was conducted free of cost in response to the call given by the Indian Orthopaedic Association to mark the observance of Bone and Joint Day.
Dr Naresh Babu said correction of spinal deformity in young children was important and challenging.
Unless these deformities were corrected in the young age, they could result in crippling deformity, he said.
As the vertebral bones are very small and the girl is only 7 kg in weight, specially designed screws were used and the deformity was corrected by pedicle subtraction osteotomy.
D.V. Mahesh, anaesthetist, helped him in the surgery.
