The Police Mahila Rakshak Teams made surprise visits to private working women’s hostels and enquired about the security and other facilities in them.

The teams, including women SIs along with their staff, enquired about permission, fire safety, appointment of watchmen and security guards, maintenance of registers and other particulars in the hostels, being run at different places.

Many not up to the mark

“Mahila Rakshak Teams, which aim at providing security for women at public places and to guard against eve-teasers, vagabonds and other anti-social elements, were instructed to inquire into the safety of working women and students staying in private hostels. The teams inspected many hostels on Wednesday,” City Police Commissioner D. Gautam Sawang said.

As many as five teams inspected nearly 30 hostels located at Suryaraopet, Labbipet, One Town, Moghalrajpuram, Patamata, Gandhinagar, Satyanarayanapuram and other places.

The teams would inspect more hostels, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP-Law and Order) G. Pala Raju.

“We inspected the rooms, kitchen, functioning of CCTVs and other facilities in women’s hostels. Many ladies hostels are running in houses and accommodated more than 30 women,” a Mahila Rakshak Team member told The Hindu.

The organisers should follow the rules prescribed by the departments concerned and take all steps for security of the students and women employees staying in the hostels.

“Police will not tolerate any negligence in running the women’s hostels,” Mr. Sawang warned.
