“The party is strong at the grass-root level, but it did not help its candidates to win comfortably in the elections. How to rectify the situation” is the most significant issue that seems to occupy the mind of the newly emerging leadership of urban Telugu Desam Party unit now led by its new president Vallabhaneni Vamsi Mohan.
Former MP Gadde Rammohan has stepped down from the post to make way for young blood to lead the party urban wing when competition is intense following electoral victories enjoyed by Congress and Praja Rajyam Party in the last general elections in city. Congress won one assembly segment (Vijayawada Central) and Lok Sabha seat while PRP pocketed two assembly segments (Vijayawada West and East).
TDP contested only Vijayawada East assembly segment while leaving the other two to its alliance partners – CPI and CPM, which also lost in the elections. The countdown has started for municipal elections, the TDP cadres and city leaders are eagerly looking to fresh strategies to breathe new life into the party.
Defeated by MP Lagadapati Rajagopal in general elections, Mr. Vamsi has got old scores to settle by taking advantage of his new post in the TDP urban.
Appeal
Mr. Vamsi started appealing to party cadres to work hard for the success of the party. At the urban general body meeting held at Swatantra Samara Yodhula Bhavan on Wednesday, he indicated that recognition would be given only to those leaders who mingled with real party workers.
TDP urban general secretary Buddha Venkanna spoke. Mr. Gadde Rammohan, senior leader Nagul Meera and others were present. Hundreds of cadres from all over the city took part, as it was the first meeting for Mr. Vamsi as urban president.
