Sonia to visit Guntur on May 2

April 28, 2014 09:50 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 07:52 pm IST - GUNTUR:

Congress president Sonia Gandhi will address a public meeting here on May 2, according to party campaign in charge K. Chiranjeevi.

Mr. Chiranjeevi announced at a media conference here on Monday that former Ministers Kanna Lakshminarayana and Dokka Manikya Vara Prasad would oversee the arrangements for the meeting.

Ms. Gandhi’s last visit to the Guntur district was nearly seven years ago, when she launched the second phase of Indiramma housing programme at Tumuluru village in Tenali division on September 2, 2007.

Even though the Congress fortunes have been sliding rapidly since the process of bifurcation of the State was set in motion, the party is credited with completing the K. L. Rao Sagar (Pulichintala) Multi Purpose Irrigation Project, a dream come true for lakhs of farmers of Krishna Western Delta, stabilising over 12 lakh acres of farm land spread across Prakasam, Guntur, Krishna and West Godavari districts.

The project, though not fully completed, was inaugurated by former Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on December 7, 2013.

Establishment of Guntur Railway Division was also one of the major achievements of the Congress. The proposals to establish a separate railway division here was moved by Rayapati Sambasiva Rao in 1996 and the division became fully operational from April, 2003.
