YSR Congress Party activists took out a candlelight march on Monday evening in protest against their party leader Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy’s one-year confinement in a jail.
The activists assembled near the YSR statue at the Police Control Room centre and marched up to the Gandhi Statue located opposite the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation office. Addressing the gathering at the Police Control Room centre, YSRCP Vijayawada Central In-charge P. Gowtham Reddy said “it was on this day in 2012, that our leader Mr. Jagan was arrested by the CBI and denied bail till date, which is against the norms of human rights.”
Raising anti-Congress and CBI slogans, the activists first performed ‘Ksheerabhishekam’ (washed YSR’s statue with milk) and then marched up to the Gandhi statue with candles in their hand. Over 1,000 activists participated in the march, which was led by P. Gowtham Reddy, YSRCP’s city unit convenor S. Jaleel Khan and senior leader Ummareddy Venkateswarulu.
Mr. Jaleel Khan, in his address, said that the detainment of Jagan by the CBI for over a year based on allegations, made by the Telugu Desam and Congress party, was illegal and against the code of human rights. He accused the CBI of playing to the tune of the ruling Congress government. “Our agitation would have taken a violent turn by now, but for our leader, Jagan, who asked us to follow a non-violent and peaceful path of protest,” he said. Mr. Gowtham Reddy added that Mr. Jagan was one among the many accused in the case and it was unfair and illegal to hold him back in a jail without giving bail. It is a ploy of the Congress government to which the TDP is a party. Moreover, the government is giving different treatment to different persons in the same case, which clearly indicates its one-sided attitude,” he alleged.
