Signature campaign against power tariff hike

March 01, 2012 02:28 pm | Updated 02:28 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Activists of CPI (M) organised signature campaign in the city on Wednesday, protesting the government's move to increase power tariff.

They collected the signatures from the public against the power tariff hike. Speaking on the occasion, the protestors said the Government has prepared to increase the power charges from April this year and impose about Rs.5 crore burden on the people.

The State Government has changed the slab rate and charges will be increased from 55 paise to one rupee. The charge on street lights and water is being hiked and the government is already collecting service charge from the customers who paid bills at e-seva centres.

Even as the public are suffering with power cuts, the government was increasing the power charges.

The government was encouraging private power plants and harassing the poor and middle class people, they alleged.

The Centre was not allotting sufficient coal and gas for generating power and State Government was not taking action against those who are evading power bills which are in some crores of rupees, said the protestors.

CPI (M) will launch an agitation, if the government increase power charges, the leaders warned.
