Following the Statewide bandh call given by YSR Congress Party condemning the arrest of the party president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, a partial bandh was observed in Krishna district on Monday.
Barring minor incidents, the bandh was peaceful in five police divisions in Krishna district and in the Vijayawada Commissionerate limits. Bandh impact was not seen much in a few areas in the district.
Police threw open a security blanket at the houses of YSRCP leaders located at different places in the city and other places in the district. Heavy police bandobust was seen at bus and railway stations and all major junctions.
Preventive custody
The police took about 450 YSRCP leaders and party workers into preventive custody in Nandigama, Nuzvid, Avanigadda, Machilipatnam and Gudivada divisions. While a few leaders were kept under house arrest to avoid trouble in view of the bandh.
“Police made 150 preventive arrests in Nandigama division on Monday, and intensified patrolling in all mandals to prevent any trouble. No incidents were reported since Sunday night and the situation was peaceful,” said Nandigama Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) B.Chand Naik.
Preventive arrests were also made in other places in the district and pickets were posted at vulnerable places, said Nuzvid DSP Chilukuri Chinnaiah.
Speaking to The Hindu , Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) M. Ravindranath Babu said that some 30 leaders were taken into preventive custody and a few were made house arrest. YSRCP leaders P. Gowtham Reddy, Vangaveeti Radha, Tatineni Padmavathi, Jana Reddy, Kennedy, and other leaders were among the arrested, he said.
Banks, post offices and government offices functioned as usual and the APSRTC operated buses to sub-urban and inter-city services. A few shops, hotels and other business establishments were closed on Besant Road, Benz Circle, Karl Marx Road, and other places in the city.
“All the police officers were instructed to remain alert. Police pickets and security will continue in the city. Public are requested to cooperate with the police in maintaining law and order,” Mr. Ravindranath Babu said.
Peaceful in Guntur
Police took as many as 1,213 persons, either leaders or activists of the YSR Congress Party, into preventive custody even as the day-long bandh in protest against the arrest of Kadapa MP Y.S Jaganmohan Reddy passed off peacefully with no untoward incident being reported from anywhere in the district.
Guntur Rural Superintendent of Police J. Satyanarayana said that 923 persons were taken into preventive custody since Sunday night in various areas in the Guntur Rural limits.
In the Guntur Urban limits, 280 persons were taken into preventive custody in 19 cases .Stray incidents were reported from Tenali and Gurazala when unidentified persons torched a bus stationed at Tenali depot. Senior party leader Ambati Rambabu was among those arrested by the police. They were released later.
