A suspected signal failure seems to have led to the accident

Seven persons sustained minor injuries when a shunting engine hit the last coach of Chennai-bound Circar Express on Platform No.4 of Vijayawada Railway Station on Tuesday.

The injured were treated on the platform by the Railway Hospital staff for the injuries and they all continued their journey in the same train, which left the station 50 minutes behind schedule. A suspected signal failure seems to have led to the train accident at 9.35 p.m. in which all persons perched on the upper berths of the General compartment (Second from Rear) fell down due to the impact of the accident leading to the injuries.

While some of them had boarded at Kakinada, others had boarded train in other stations, the Railway officials said.

The Divisional Railway Manager Pradeep Kumar and other officials visited the platform and supervised the rescue operations.

The train was cleared for continuing the journey at 10.35 p.m.

A departmental enquiry has been ordered into the cause of accidents and circumstances leading to the mishap to determine if it was mechanical/electrical failure or human error that led to the shunting engine hitting the luggage van of the Carcar Express that was stationary.
