Solar power is the best alternative for all forms of conventional sources of energy and is the cleanest form, said PVP Siddhartha Institute of Technology Principal S.VM. Bhuvanaika Rao.
He was addressing a seminar on ‘Energy Conservation, Environment and Solar Power, on the occasion of Energy Conservation Day here on Tuesday. The Seminar was organised by The Institution of Engineers - Vijayawada Chapter.
Professor Bhuvanaika Rao pointed out that energy generation through any form of conventional method such as thermal, hydro or nuclear has a direct impact on the nature and environment.
The per capita power consumption is an index of civilisation. Quoting from the energy conservation mission, he said, “The earth, the water, and the air are not a gift to us from our parents, but a loan from our children.”
He pointed out that most part of the energy was produced by burning fossil fuels, which in turn emits huge quantity of heat absorbing carbon dioxide. And the presence of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is the major reason for global warming.
The professor noted that India emits only 1.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, compared to 18.8 MT of Australia and 16 MT of USA, and the per capita power consumption of India was only 950 units.
He urged people to switch to CFL or LED lighting system and use star-rated fans and air-conditioners to conserve energy. “One unit saved is one unit produced. By using these systems the billing can by reduced by 50 per cent,” he said. On solar energy he said that a one-metre panel on a clear day can produce about 120 watts of electricity.
The NEDCAP District Manager K. Srinivasa Rao said that both the State and the central governments were giving subsidy for generation and use of solar power.
The Chairman of the institute P. Ravindra Babu and secretary G.V. Srinivasulu also spoke.
