‘Seemandhra MLAs ready to quit'

July 08, 2011 09:07 am | Updated 09:07 am IST - VJIAYAWADA:

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has asserted that the elected representatives from coastal Andhra were ready for any sacrifice and will tender their resignations in support of unified Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mylavaram MLA and TDP district president Devineni Umamaheswara Rao said that the Congress party was insulting the Telugu people with its political drama on separate Telangana. Any decision to bifurcate the State would result in mayhem in the State. The people here (coastal Andhra) were ready for any sacrifice to keep the State unified, he said.

Human chain

The TDP leaders later formed a human chain on Bandar Road. They raised slogans against TRS president K. Chandarsekhar Rao, State and Central governments.

The AICC president Sonia Gandhi and UPA Government has no right to divide the Andhra State. Ms. Sonia Gandhi should understand Article 371D, which speaks about special provisions for Andhra Pradesh before taking any decision. A political crisis was prevailing in the state following resignations of few MLAs. Those who resigned were on Congress rolls, he said, adding, “If they wanted our resignations as well, we are game for it. But, it leads to constitutional crisis,” he said. Further, any attempt to carve out separate Telangana would fuel demand for another 15 separate states, including Vidarbha, South Tamil Nadu, and Gorkhaland. The country's development and security would be at stake with the creation of new states. The UPA government should remind these issues before arriving at a decision on dividing the State, he said.

There was no truth in propaganda that coastal people were in favour of a state with their silence. They reacted vociferously to ‘December 9 statement'. Following which, the government constituted Sri Krishna Committee. However, its recommendations were not implemented so far. Ms. Sonia Gandhi or Congress leaders were unable to set right the mess they created on Telangana issue, he added. The TDP MLC Y. Babu Rajendraprasad and others were present.
