Nick of time

A 22-year-old who suffered a heart attack after being electrocuted in a shopping complex on Mahatma Gandhi Road was rushed to Ramesh Hospitals on Ring Road within 10 minutes and could be revived. He is said to be getting better. Ramesh Hospitals Chief cardiologist P. Ramesh Babu said this was a classic case of the golden hour, platinum minute concept. The heart of the youth developed a short circuit and was beating at the rapid rate of 400 times a minute. “A heart beating at such a fast rate does not pump blood. Fortunately for the youth, a small volume of blood flowed out and kept the brain alive even though the patient was unconscious.

The short circuit in the heart could be fixed only by another electric shock. But it took four shocks with the defibulator to break the short circuit. Dr. Babu said that all precautions should be taken for electrical work or the outcome could be fatal.
