District Collector S. Suresh Kumar asserted that the closure of government schools having less than 10 and 20 students each will be certain but a temporary phenomenon.
Running these schools will be actually a loss as the resources are wasted. The necessary infrastructure has been created in the schools and they have teachers too but not the minimum number of students. There are some schools which have more number of teachers than students. Some of these schools will be closed.
At the same time, parents will be counselled to retain their children in government schools.
Wherever schools lacked the required facilities, funds are being provided to make up for the deficiencies and efforts made to improve the quality of education which is not inferior to that of private institutions.
Teachers working in schools having low student strength will be deployed in schools that desperately need them.
The Education Department has identified 72 schools which have less than 10 students each and 120 schools with less than 20 students each.
No effort will be spared to keep these schools running but if the action taken to retain children does not yield the desired result, the schools will be closed. They may be reopened at a later stage if the situation improves, Collector S. Suresh Kumar said in a press conference held on Monday.
With the schools reopening on June 12 after the summer vacation, due emphasis is being laid on motivating the parents to repose confidence in Government schools. Nevertheless, the Education Department will close schools which do not have minimum numbers of students if the remedial action taken by it fails to arrest the trend.
