The apathy of municipal corporation officials came to the fore with students taking part in a ‘sramadaanam’, a free service for a cause, to repair a road near their school here on Monday.

The students of Krishnaveni Talent School in Bhavanipuram took time off from their regular curricular activity for a social cause. They ventured onto the road immediately after morning assembly in the school. Armed with crowbars, spades and ‘gamelas’ (bowl-shaped iron vessel for carrying earth, sand and cement etc.), they lined up in a disciplined manner.

The students dug the road wherever it was necessary to repair it and filled the potholes with the gravel and construction debris.

The 27 Division former corporator Abdul Qadar said that the VMC did not repair the road though representations were made umpteen times. The plight of residents on this stretch of road was discussed in the VMC Council.

Tenders

The tenders were also approved for 500 mts, which is close to the National Highway. But, the contractor was not willing to execute the works as the VMC had not cleared the pending bills, he said.

Local senior citizens and leaders participated in the srama danam programme. Former mayor and YSR Congress leader Tadi Sakuntala, local leaders Badita Sankar, Maqdoom Basha, M. Vengal Reddy, D. Jagan, and B. Naga Lakshmi took part in the srama danam.
