The Gora couple bridged the gap between precept and practice and strove relentlessly to achieve social change. They developed atheism as a positive way of life and for peaceful transformation of society, said noted advocate Karnati Ramamohan Rao on Saturday.
Addressing a seminar organised at the Atheist Centre to mark Saraswathi Gora’s 101 birth anniversary, he said Ms. Gora was a freedom fighter and a social revolutionary who fought against untouchability and caste system.
Jana Vignana Vedika leader from Nizamabad, a noted lawyer and a rationalist Chelimela Rajeswer, recalled his long association with Saraswathi Gora. He said, she worked with great passion to promote casteless marriages and to dispel superstitions and blind beliefs such as ‘jogini’ system.
Atheist Centre’s executive director G. Vijayam said the recent Supreme Court judgment barring convicted persons from contesting elections was a welcome decision. “The move will go a long way in enactment of the much-awaited electoral reforms,” he opined. He also welcomed the SC ruling that voters had the right to reject all contestants in polls. He said former Andhra Pradesh Governor Krishna Kant had strongly advocated the “Right to Reject” option while speaking at a seminar on democracy and social change at the Atheist Centre way back in 1995.
