Sanitary workers' stir continues

August 30, 2011 11:49 am | Updated 11:49 am IST - GUNTUR:

The plight of residents in having to put up with stench and squalor of heaps of garbage lying unattended in colonies is likely to continue as over 1,000 contract workers have been on strike for the fourth consecutive day.

The workers led by their unions have been demanding that the tenders for hiring contract workers should be through nomination basis and not on the e-procurement as was being mooted by the Guntur Municipal Corporation.

Municipal Commissioner K. Sudhakar directed the sanitary inspectors to engage daily wagers to remove garbage and said the inspectors would be given advances.

The GMC has about 600 regular workers, but the contract workers clearly outnumber them with a strength of 1,200 workers.

The contract workers affiliated to various unions often go on flash strikes with their intentions often bordering on black mail leaving little choice to GMC.

The municipal commissioners in the past have tried to break their monopoly, but the unions have always had the upper hand.
