‘Sand mafia rampant at Penumaluru’

March 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The Congress City Committee has demanded that the government control the activities of ‘sand mafia’ with an iron fist.

City Congress president Malladi Vishnu expressed concern that the government’s move to hand over sand reaches to DWCRA groups had given scope for more irregularities in the sale of sand.

“The government’s decision to hand over sand reaches to DWCRA groups has led to proliferation of activities by the rich and influential, who have gained control over sand sale,” he said.

Memorandum submitted

In a memorandum to the Sub-Collector S. Nagalakshmi, Mr. Vishnu alleged that sand mafia was rampant in Bhavanipuram, Nandigama, Penumaluru, Avanigadda, Gannavaram and other areas in the district.

So much so, sand was being transported in trucks without any waybills and officials were turning a blind eye to these irregularities, he said.

Selling at huge prices

In the guise of Boatsmen Society, a few contractors were transporting sand illegally in trucks and were making quick money by selling the sand at exorbitant prices.

Amid these irregularities, genuine and general public were not getting sufficient supply of sand and were forced to cough up extra money to buy the same, he added.

The government’s decision to hand over sand reaches to DWCRA groups has led to proliferation of activities by the rich and influential, who have gained control over sand sale.

Malladi Vishnu,

City Congress president
