Concentration is the key to safe driving, Krishna Regional Transport Officer Ch. V.K. Subba Rao has said.
Mr. Subba Rao was addressing the inaugural session of a special drive, Accident-Free Week launched by the AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) at Pundit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) here on Tuesday.
The drive, which will continue till July 22, is part of a State-wide move to educate drivers on the significance of safe driving.
Mr. Subba Rao said that an analysis proved that most of the road accidents occurred due to distraction from the wheel.
“A driver cannot afford to allow his mind to wander even for fraction of a second, as it gives scope for an accident,” he said.
The RTO said that it was also important for a driver to switch off his mobile phone while on duty.
“Since they are serving in the public transport sector, they should exercise utmost caution to ensure passenger safety,” he said.
Drivers and mechanics from the corporation’s 14 depots in Krishna district attended the awareness session. It was followed by a training programme, wherein Motor Vehicle Inspector Subba Rao and HRD expert Sankara Rao spoke about the motor vehicle norms and the need for inculcating the right kind of attitude.
The campaign will include medical camp for drivers on Wednesday, vehicle maintenance activities on Thursday, family counselling day on Friday, training day on Saturday, distribution of awards to outstanding drivers on the sixth day. The drive will culminate in a blood donation camp on the concluding day.
RTC Executive Director R. Nagaraju, Regional Manager G. Sudesh Kumar, Deputy Chief Traffic Manager (Rural) Sriramulu, and Deputy CTM (Urban) Nagendra Prasad were present.
