The Union Government is according top priority to maintenance of security at railway stations and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) will shortly recruit 4,500 constables to beef up security on railway station premises, Railway Protection Force Director-General Ranjit Singh said here on Thursday.
ISS installation
The Director-General, who conducted a review meeting of the Guntur division, told media persons that the recruitment of constables was in tune with the modernisation of the RPF being taken up on a massive scale after the 26/11 terror strike in Mumbai.
The Railways had taken up modernisation at a cost of Rs.350 crores by installing Integrated Security Scheme (ISS).
Security at stations
The RPF contingent would have 12 companies of women constables, called Mahila Vahini and be used in frisking and security duties, he observed.
The level of security at all railway stations would be increased with the installation of CCTV cameras, dog squads and Bomb Disposal Squads, he said.
The RPF was also working with the State Police in manning the railway tracks and bridges. Various specific needs of the security on Guntur Railway Division like naxalite threat were also discussed.
Dog squad
Divisional Security Commissioner, Guntur, P.V.L. Shanta Ram said that they had already installed CC security cameras on Guntur railway station premises and pressed into service a dog squad.
