Robbery gangs from the neighbouring States are on the prowl in the city, giving a tough task to the police. The thieves are following various modus operandi to commit the crimes.
Even as the robbery case reported from Tikkle Road in which the accused detained a woman and robbed the house is still fresh in the minds, a gang struck a house at Rayanapadu in the wee hours on September 16. The thieves tied the hands and legs of the four inmates after injuring them and looted the house. The dacoits also made a vain bid to rob another house in the vicinity at the same time, but escaped after an alarm was raised.
Police suspect that a gang from Maharashtra might have robbed the house belonging to K. Suresh who runs a book house at Rayanapadu. The gang also committed thefts in Nalgonda, Warangal and Karimnagar districts in Telangana State and killed five persons, say the police. “The thieves stay at abandoned places on the city outskirts. Posing petty vendors in the day, they conduct recce in various localities to find locked houses. In the night, they made them targets. This is the first time that the gang struck in Vijayawada,” the police said.
Special teams formedCity Police Commissioner A.B. Venkateswara Rao said about ten teams had been formed to nab the culprits. “Teams have been sent to Maharashtra and Hyderabad. Efforts are on to nab the dacoit gang,” he said.
However, the robberies brought the poor intelligence network and patrolling in the city to the fore.
