The massive road blockade staged by the activists of the Joint Action Committee in support of united Andhra Pradesh at Kanakadurgamma Vaaradhi on National Highway-5 brought traffic to a grinding halt on Tuesday.
Braving scorching sun, the activists sat on the Howrah-Chennai highway on the Krishna district side of the vaaradhi and raised slogans against Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao and Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, accusing them of ‘dividing a joint family’ for their ‘political benefits’.
People from different walks of life participated in the dharna that continued for about an hour peacefully. Vehicles coming from and going towards Guntur side were stopped and a few commuters joined the agitation voluntarily.
Besides the activists of the Congress and the Telugu Desam, members of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Praja Rajyam too gathered in large numbers and there was a significant participation of women in the agitation.
The activists expressed their resentment in various forms – shouting slogans, clapping continuously and inviting people to join the movement.
