May 28, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Do you know the number of persons dying in road accidents has now surpassed deaths in other crimes in Andhra Pradesh?

Many accidents are occurring due to human errors and many are avoidable. Rash and negligent driving, cell phone driving, bad road conditions, overloading, drunken driving, poor vehicle condition, continuous driving, violating traffic rules are the reasons for accidents, police officials said.

During the law and order review by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu with top police officials here on Thursday, police said that 2,971 people died in 8,244 accidents in Andhra Pradesh from January to April this year. As many as 10,813 people were injured.

The number of people who died due to crimes such as murders, dowry deaths, accidental deaths and dowry murders is in some hundreds. In the last four months, 200 people died by committing suicide and 83 dowry deaths were registered.

Can be prevented

“In 2014, as many as 7,862 people died in 23,512 road mishaps, and 29,791 people sustained injuries. A total of 23,178 accidents occurred last year and 8,114 people died and 29,893 people suffered injuries,” said Director General of Police (DGP) J.V. Ramudu.

Road accidents can be prevented with the cooperation of Transport, AP Transco, Roads and Buildings, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Revenue, Municipal and other departments and the public, say the police.

“Road accidents are claiming thousands of lives. Police are taking measures to prevent road mishaps with the coordination of other departments. We request the public to follow traffic rules to avoid accidents,” Mr. Ramudu said.

Meeting held

The DGP said that a meeting with Transport Department officials held on Thursday discussed road engineering and other measures. In many districts, police conducted joint inspections with other departments and identified accident-prone areas, corners and narrow roads.

The condition of the injured in road accidents was very pathetic as many of them were bed-ridden and lost their livelihood.
