Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, crossed another milestone on Tuesday with the launching of a novel project to generate a completely pollution-free 120 MW captive power generation by using 100 per cent blast furnace and coke oven gas.
This is the first of its kind in the Indian steel Industry. The average power requirement of VSP at 6.3 million tonne stage will be 418 MW. The RINL is currently having three turbo generators each 60 MW (180 MW) capacity and two turbo generators of 67.5 (135MW) each taking the total captive power generation capacity to 315 MW.
RINL Chairman-cum-Managing Director P. Madhusudan lighted up the Boiler No.1 to mark the commissioning of the plant built at a cost of Rs.676 crore. Describing it as a step towards achieving self-sufficiency in power generation and to reduce dependency on the State Grid in the process of steelmaking, he complimented the entire Project Collective and the associates involved for successful completion of the project.
Director (Projects) P.C. Mohapatra and Director (Operations) D.N. Rao said 2015-16 would be a victorious year for RINL as the new units in the expansion would stabilise ramping up its production.
In order to efficiently utilise the surplus Blast Furnace Gas (BFG), the state-of-the-art technology Boiler Turbo Generator (BTG) Power Plant is designed for firing 100 per cent BFG and Coke Oven Gas for the new captive power plant of 120 MW-capacity.
Executive Director (Works) S.S. Kumar, General Managers, senior officers, union leaders Mantri Rajsekhar, D. Adinarayana and N. Rama Rao were present.
