RSS joint general secretary Baghaiah cautioned fishermen against the alleged attempts by the foreigners to bag the contracts for operating their vessels in inland waterways like the one connecting Kakinada with Puducherry.
This is over and above the domination enjoyed by them in deep sea fishing at the cost of native fishermen. Fishermen are being deprived of their right by big businessmen, in the absence of a concrete policy that would curb the illegal activities, he observed.
Participating as the chief guest in ‘Matsyakarula Mahagarjana’ organised by A.P Fishermen Welfare Federation (FWF) to mark its 10{+t}{+h}anniversary on Saturday, Mr. Baghaiah said fishermen were not able to enjoy the fruits of Blue Revolution as little had been made so far to protect their rights. The government should impose curbs on industries which proposed to set up their units in the coastal corridors, lest the seas should be polluted beyond repair. It would be fishermen again who would bear the brunt of such industrialisation, he warned.
Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas said the government was taking steps for welfare of the community. Due priority was given to establishment of health centres in fishermen villages. Endowments Minister P. Manikyala Rao said steps would be taken for constructing ‘Matsya Narayana temples’ in coastal habitations. MP Gokaraju Gangaraju stressed the need for cyclone shelters across the coastline.
