“Every civilian is a policeman and people should help the police keep a check on antisocial elements and maintain peace,” speakers at the Police Commemoration Day programmes said on Sunday.
Officers recalled the services of the personnel who had laid down their lives fighting Naxalites, rowdies, robbers, smugglers, and dacoits.
They expressed condolences to the bereaved family members and assured to extend them all possible help.
Superintendent of Police R. Jayalakshmi paid tributes to police martyrs at Parade Grounds here.
Speaking on the occasion, she recalled the sacrifices of the police personnel who died while discharging their duties in Krishna district.
Later, police personnel took out a rally from the Parade Grounds to the Koneru Centre.
Ms. Jayalakshmi presented certificates to those who stood top in the essay-writing and elocution competitions, and donated blood in the camp organised on the occasion.
Additional Superintendent of Police V. Prem Kumar, Machilipatnam Deputy Superintendent of Police K. Lavanya Lakshmi, Armed Reserve DSP Chandrashekar, Town CI P. Muralidhar, and other officers were among those who paid tributes to the martyrs. Police Commemoration Day was also observed at the AR Grounds in Vijayawada. City Police Commissioner N. Madhusudhan Reddy placed a wreath at the martyrs’ pylon and paid homage to the slain police personnel.
Mr. Reddy, along with civil and AR police, observed silence and paid tributes to the martyrs.
Addressing the police officers, retired police personnel, freedom fighters, and the police families who attended the commemoration programme, the Commissioner said that the government was ready to extend necessary help to the families who had lost their bread winners.
“Not only in fighting with the extremists and antisocial elements, the police are also involved in many other activities such as providing security for VVIPs, bandobast during festivals, preventing crimes, controlling traffic, and social service activities. On many occasions, police are losing their personal lives in doing justice to their duties round the clock,” said Mr. Reddy.
The government was taking measures to take up welfare activities for the police and was giving promotions for eligible staff, said the Commissioner and called upon the personnel to draw inspiration from the martyrs and work with dedication.
Parade held

Minister for Civil Supplies Kasu Krishna Reddy and Minister for Rural Development D.M Varaprasad Rao led the homage at the Police Smriti Stupam at Nagarampalem. MLCs, Singam Basavapunniah and K.S Lakshmana Rao were also present. Later, accompanied by Collector S. Suresh Kumar and S.Ps, J. Satyanarayana (Guntur Rural) and Ake Ravikrishna (Guntur Urban), the Minister met the next of kith and kin of policemen who have lost their lives in Maoist-related violent incidents during the last 10 years.
The policemen held a parade as a mark of respect to the slain policemen.

Later, addressing a meeting, Mr. Krishna Reddy recollected the courage shown by the policemen in maintaining public order and the steadfast commitment in protecting the life and properties of the public.
Mr. Prasada Rao said that the welfare of policemen and their families have been high on the agenda of the State government.
Later, the ministers interacted with members of the families of slain policemen and consoled them.
