Residents polluting canals to get notices

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is gearing up to serve notices on residents and commercial establishments which dump waste in canals in the city.

VMC Commissioner G. Veerapandian, who inspected Krishna Nagar, Ayyappa Nagar, Skew Bridge, Sitara Junctions, Rotary Nagar and other areas on Friday, asked the officials to create awareness among residents and establishments over proper disposal of waste and the adverse affects of polluting the canals by dumping trash into them. He asked officials to provide sufficient dumper bins in localities near the canals and this would be followed by notices if the residents did not mend their ways. Later, he visited Sitara Junction and Rotary Nagar and expressed displeasure over the poor maintenance of the outfall drains. He asked officials take up repairs to the damaged drains. VMC Commissioner instructed officials to ensure hygiene on the roads leading to IGMC stadium, which will be hosting the Republic Day celebrations .He asked officials to repair the defunct water fountain near the Stadium complex.
