People representing various associations are continuing relay hunger strike across the rural parts of Krishna district to press for their demand to keep the State united against the UPA decision to carve out Telanagana.
Around 100 lawyers who boycotted their duties on Friday joined the relay-hunger strike at Koneru Centre. Machilipatnam Bar Association President Arepu Venkateswara Rao told newsmen that a call was given to the lawyers to boycott duties till August 17. However, second phase of protests was likely to be finalised on Saturday.
While Teachers’ Joint Action Committee members began a relay hunger strike in Machilipatnam town, Chamber of Merchants on Friday held talks with Samaikyandhra JAC and called for protests across the district. In yet another novel mode of protest, a few tiffin shops and small hotels on Pedana-Bantumilli Road on Friday distributed their day’s tiffin to the public as part of their protest for Samaikyandhara. Vasavi Engineering College students also joined in the relay hunger strike in Pedana town, where weavers presented a demonstration of weaving activity on the road.
Protests held
People from different walks of life held a demonstration at the Hindu College Centre amid heavy rain along with leaders of various associations. Doctors and paramedical staff staged protests under the aegis of ‘Medical JAC’ of Guntur Medical College (GMC) and the Regional Laboratory situated on its premises.
Strike by the APSRTC unions continued to hit public transport.
