Congress Rajya Sabha member K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao has urged the Centre to reconsider its decision to privatise the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI).
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the MP said selling of entire government stake in the DCI was not a strategically beneficial or secured move.
YSR Congress Party MP V. Vijayasai Reddy, meanwhile, has also made an appeal to the government to roll back its plan to disinvest its entire stake in the Visakhapatnam-based DCI, in the zero hour in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
Pointing to the fact that DCI was solely controlling the comprehensive dredging operations in the 7,500-km coastline of the country and helped to ensure continuous availability of the desired depths in the shipping channels of the major and minor ports, fishing harbours and other maritime organisations including the Indian Navy, Mr. Rao said it also played a pivotal role in the security of the county.
He warned that the decision of the Union Cabinet could become a threat to national security.
‘Set up panel’
The Congress MP said the government could form an expert committee for a comprehensive study of future of the dredging sector in the country and bring the issue before Parliament for detailed discussions.
