Officials of the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) in association with South Central Railway, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), Zilla Parishad and NGOs organised rallies and awareness programmes to mark World Environment Day on Tuesday.
Zilla Parishad Chairperson Gadde Anuradha, VMC Commissioner J. Nivas, PCB Joint Chief Environmental Engineer B. Madhusudhan Rao, Environmental Engineer Satyanarayana, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) R. Dhananjayulu and other officials participated.
With a message
The South Central Railway (SCR) and the PCB officials took out a rally from the parcel office to Railway Employees Colony.
The participants took part in the sanitation drive on the platforms and the PCB officials arranged new dustbins in the railway station.
The organisers arranged shows performed by cultural troupes on the ill-effects of plastic and polythene, at the railway station main entrance.
They explained on how the polythene and other degradable material was polluting the ground water and the environment.
Earlier, the PCB officers planted saplings at Nagara Vanam, in Kothur Tadepalli village and participated in an environment awareness programme at the Gannavaram airport.
SCR Additional DRMs G. Sumana (operations) and M.V.S. Ramaraju (infrastructure), Senior Divisional Commercial Manager P. Bhaskar Reddy, Vijayawada Station Director Ch. Suresh, and Chief Medical Superintendent N.C. Rao were among those who participated in the programmes.
High Tea event
Members of the Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) Young India Amaravati chapter organised ‘No Plastic Pollution’ (this year’s UN theme) High Tea event to mark the day.
Krishna district Collector B. Lakshmikantham released a report on environmental pollution and recommendations to bring it down, submitted by members of the YI Amaravati chapter.
The organisation chairman Tarun Kakani, members Bhaskar Nannapaneni and Sandeep Mandava and CII zonal head Chandan Patnaik were present.
The 100-point recommendations, researched by the YI, is proposed to be adopted and implemented by them.
