Corporation staff had a tough time in clearing a drain

Some houses got inundated in Pezzonipeta near Kedareswaripeta here on Tuesday following heavy rain that lashed the city during early hours of Tuesday. The people waded through knee-deep water to reach their destination.

The residents had to pump out rainwater that entered their houses with vessels. About 25 families faced problem as their houses were inundated.

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials had a tough time in clearing the drain. The mesh gate could not be lifted manually to clear the garbage that piled up there. The officials brought a backhoe machine to lift the gate. The water gushed out into Eluru canal as soon as the gate was lifted.

The problem cropped up with choking of the drain that carries waste water from the railway station, some parts of Quddus Nagar, and Pezzonipeta.

The VMC staff removed piles of mattresses, air cooler material, gunny bags etc from drain.

The gate was also stuck up due to poor maintenance. The drain passes through CK Reddy Marg, and joins Eluru canal.

Former local corporator Meesala Rajeswara Rao said that the people had problem for a considerable time as the rainwater entered their houses. The sanitary workers were not pressed into clearing the drain owing to water force.
