Vijayawada division of South Central Railway (SCR) handled a record 100 million originating passengers during the 2013-14 financial year and projected an increase of 12 per cent in its overall gross earnings from Rs.2,904 crore to Rs.3,260 crore.
Compared to the 2012-13 earnings, the passenger earnings increased by 23 per cent from Rs.538 crore to Rs.662 crore, while the freight earnings shot up to Rs.2,490 crore from Rs.2,276 crore, up by 9.4 per cent.
During the 2012-13 financial year, the division ferried 98 million originating passengers and it has increased by marginal three per cent and touched 100.44 million till March 30 during the 2013-14 financial year, informed Pradeep Kumar, Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager.
Though in terms of numbers, it may be just three per cent, other divisions in SCR could not manage this growth.
Passenger ticket fare hike contributed 20 per cent of the passenger revenue earnings and three per cent was generated through increase in number of passengers travelled, he explained.
