The South Central Railway (SCR) headquarters on Thursday received the Terms of Reference from the Central and State governments and the Railway Board pertaining to bifurcation of railways in the wake of the division of the State.
“The Board has constituted a team of officers for the purpose, and it has two senior officers from the SCR taking up the task,” said SCR General Manager P.K. Srivastava. Addressing the media along with DRM Pradeep Kumar after inspecting the wagon workshop at Rayanapadu and Vijayawada station premises on Thursday,
Mr. Srivastava said the exercise of bifurcation was underway, and that several operational issues for giving the new zone its final shape were being sorted out.
Consultations are also on to ensure a win-win situation for all stakeholders. Fixing the headquarters of the new zone is not a big issue, but the form of it, divisions to be included and the pattern of freight traffic have to be meticulously worked out for avoiding conflicting interests. “Several issues of interchange may crop up while choosing between Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam, both of which are major movers of freight,” the GM observed.
He said the SCR was poised to achieve a loading of 120 million tonne (MT) of freight by the end of the current financial year as against the targeted 115 MT.
Steps for ensuring proper functioning of CCTV cameras have been taken but there are some issues with the reliability of baggage scanners. Necessary action is being taken by the departments concerned, he added.
