Senior leaders say the party leadership is not in a hurry to finalise names

With the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) getting a clear majority in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) elections, the race has begun among leaders within the party for the coveted Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts.

A notification has to be issued for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor and there is uncertainty over the reservations for the post.

This apart, MLAs and MPs have to take oath as they are ex-officio members and have to cast their votes during elections for both the posts.

Though, this exercise is likely to take time, senior corporators in the Telugu Desam Party are already lobbying hard to impress the party leadership.

In the race

Among the leaders, the names of Chennupati Gandhi (Division 13), Jasti Sambasiva Rao (Division 8), Koneru Sridhar (Division 9), Muppa Venkateswara Rao (Division 42) and Devineni Aparna (Division 2) are doing rounds in the party circles.

However, party leaders indicate that the top posts this time would not be given to women candidates as the posts were held by women candidates in the last two terms.

A section of the TDP leaders say the party leadership is not in a hurry to finalise the names. “The party is looking for a candidate who has experience and sound knowledge about the corporation affairs. More importantly, a clean image,” the leader said, adding, “There are four to five candidates in the race.

A list will be finalised shortly and presented to the party chief, who will take a call on the matter.”
