The residents of Santhi Nagar in 55th division staged a novel protest by selling gas stoves to scrap merchant here on Tuesday.

CPI(M) city secretary Ch. Babu Rao, addressing the gathering on the occasion, said that the LPG prices touched Rs. 1,350 due to linking of subsidised cylinders with cash transfer scheme. The State and the Central governments were working to protect the interests of corporates like Reliance rather than common man.

At New Rajarajeswaripeta, the residents burnt the water cess notices served by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC). They said that the Corporation asked them to pay Rs. 500 to Rs. 700 towards water charges which was a phenomenal increase compared to what they were paying a year ago.

Mr. Babu Rao said that while the water was being supplied free of cost at national capital, Delhi, the VMC was levying huge charges on tax payers here. There was an increase of 500 pre cent in the water charges.
