Property tax hike: taxpayers cry foul

August 03, 2011 12:12 pm | Updated 12:12 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Tax Payers Association secretary M.V. Anjaneyulu has demanded the hike in property tax in the city be stalled immediately and not be introduced till such time when the State Government would pass on the funds due to the municipal corporation.

Taking objection to the notices issued by the corporation in this regard, Mr. Anjaneyulu said that it was unfortunate that the Government was trying to escape from its responsibility of providing funds to the municipal corporation by allowing hike in property tax. This would mean additional burden on the people who were already struggling to pay various taxes.

Mr. Anjaneyulu said that as per the State Finance Commission recommendations, the Government would have to provide Rs.27,631 crore to the municipal bodies for the past six years but till now only Rs. 215 crore had been passed on to these civic bodies during this period. He further said that going by these recommendations, the Vijayawada municipal corporation would have got nearly Rs.1,130 crores. Also, the city would have to get compensation of Rs. 65 crores towards property tax and Rs.75 crore towards motor vehicle tax compensation, he added. Mr. Anjaneyulu took objection to the formation of the Property Tax Board at the State-level to deal with and finalise property tax .The tax association office bearers asked the property owners to express their protest against the property tax notices. They should submit their objections at the corporation main office or in the circle offices and get receipt for the same. For any help in this regard, contact 9440905552 or 9885325772.
