Probe sought into Vijayawada flyover collapse

December 11, 2013 01:12 pm | Updated 01:12 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has stated that it will initiate a judicial inquiry into the quality of Inner Ring Road (IRR) project works taken up by Vijayawada Guntur Tenali Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority (VGTMUDA) when it comes to power.

Addressing a press conference in Vijayawada on Tuesday, Mylavaram MLA and TDP district president Devineni Umamaheswara Rao alleged that substandard materials were used in construction of the Gunadala flyover.

The UDA officials turned blind eye as they received kickbacks from the contractors, he alleged.

Had the collapse taken place during working hours or daytime, there would have been immense human loss. Vijayawada (Central) MLA Malladi Vishnu, who served as VGTMUDA chairman, owes an explanation to the public, he added.

TDP urban president Buddha Venkanna demanded stringent action against the culprits.

CPI city secretary Donepudi Sankar and CPI (M) city secretary Ch. Babu Rao said the collapse of girders reflected the corruption of the ruling party.

They demanded an enquiry into the incident.

YSR Congress central constituency in-charge P. Gowtham Reddy said the contractor had colluded with the authorities to lower the quality for more profits.

“The contractor had used 12mm steel rods instead of 20 mm and also used low grade cement and sand. Even the watering was not done properly,” he alleged.
