The number of students fallen sick after consuming ‘kichidi’ for breakfast in the Social Welfare Hostel in Angaluru village of Gudlavalleru mandal of Krishna district has gone up to 57 on Thursday from 20 on Wednesday.
Deputy Director of Social Welfare D. Madhusudhan Rao informed The Hindu that only 28 were affected and the remaining students were brought to the GGH as a precautionary measure for tests.
Of the 28 affected, 23 were admitted to the GGH and five students were being treatment at Andhra Hospitals. The condition of all the students was reported to be stable. The students, who were brought under ‘precautionary measures’ were sent home, said the Deputy Director.
Earlier in the day, Minister for Secondary Education K. Parthasarthi visited the students at the GGH and informed the media that an inquiry was initiated and appropriate action would be taken against the officials concerned.
Suspended
It is learnt that the house warden and the cook have been placed under suspension and the suspension order for the assistant social welfare officer has been sent to the Commissioner at Hyderabad for approval.
Local MLAs Yallmanchili Ravi, Malladi Vishnu, V. Srinivas and former MLA Vangaveeti Radha also visited the students at the GGH. Meanwhile, the Joint Director from the Commissionerate of Social Welfare Uma Devi reached the city to head the inquiry.
