Precious drinking water was running down Prakasam Barrage into the sea because the Telangana government was using Srisailam project water to generate power. This could result in drinking water shortage in Rayalaseema, Hyderabad and Chennai cities in the months to come, according to Irrigation Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao.

Addressing media persons, he said 6,000 cusecs surplus water was being discharged into the sea. He said Srisailam reservoir was operated in integration with Nagarjunasagar dam to meet the drinking water needs of Chennai and Hyderabad and the irrigation needs of farmers in the ayacut of Srisailam Right Bank Canal and Krishna Delta Canals.

He said A.P. and other neighbouring States were ready to supply 300 megawatts of power needed by Telangana, but water once discharged from the barrage was lost forever.
