The four important factors that contribute to back and neck pain are poor posture, lack of exercise, physical trauma (shock) and mental stress.

Speaking at an awareness programme on ‘Neck and Back pain’ conducted at the M.J.Naidu Super Speciality Hospital, Chief Orthopaedician M.J.Naidu said software engineers who worked continuously slouched over their laptops or personal computers were developing back pains.

He said the backbone and spinal cord deteriorate with age, but it was happening even in youngsters because many of them get habituated to sitting or working in a poor posture and do not get enough exercise. He said a healthy spine had four curves that should be maintained through out life. Various health problems particularly pain were caused if the bones of the backbone begin to deteriorate.

Endoscopic Spine surgeon G.Vidya Sagar said those suffering back pain should go straight to a ‘spine clinic’ that had the required specialists and equipment to diagnose the cause of the pain.
