Police take to Facebook to curb crimes against women, children

Women harassment, rape cases see a decline, while abetment to suicide cases have gone up in Prakasam district

In an attempt to deal with the cases related to crimes against women more efficiently, the Prakasam police have taken to the social media platform. The police have launched a vigorous campaign to encourage the victims of such cases to lodge their complaints through Facebook.

   Victims of woman harassment or ragging need not to go all the way to police stations to lodge their complaints. They can just log in to Facebook and lodge their complaints on the page of the AP Police- Prakasam with the case details, Prakasam Superintendent of Police Ch. Srikanth says, promising swift action against the offenders. 

   A report compiled by the District Crime Records Bureau suggests that cases pertaining to crimes against women and children, which had gone up to 977 in 2013 from 957 in the previous year, has come down to 755 till October, 2014. Of the total such cases, as many as 332 have been registered under the Section 498(a) of the IPC (harassment of woman) when compared to the 391 last year and 288 in 2012. Cases booked under the under Section 354 of the IPC (outraging modesty of woman) stands at 244 till October 2014 as against the 298 last year and 229 in 2012. The number of rape cases has declined to 10 this year when compared to 11 in last year and 37 in 2012, while cases relating to abetment of suicide have gone up to 33 in 2014 from 24 in the previous year and 26 in 2012.

   While no case was registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act in 2012, the number has gone up to 31 this year as against 28 in 2013, the DCRB report says. The number of murder cases has declined to 17 this year from 27 last year and 34 in 2012. The kidnap cases stands at 35 in 2014 when compared to 62 last year and 69 in 2012.
