The State government is planning to constitute a high power committee (HPC) to speed up work on the Polavaram project as efforts are being made to complete the project by 2018.

At a meeting with Irrigation Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, Chief Secretary I.Y.R Krishna Rao and other senior officers, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu instructed the officials to work towards completing the project as scheduled for the convenience of farmers.

“Every year, some 2,000 tmcft of Godavari water goes into the sea and it has to be tapped for better use through Polavaram project. Measures should be taken to complete the project within the schedule to enable farmers reap more benefits,” he said.

Land acquisition

Indicating that clearance from the Ministry of Environment would be obtained shortly, Mr. Naidu wanted the officials to complete the land acquisition process at the earliest and make the details of the works available online. If necessary the irrigation authorities should appoint a consultant for updating information on the ongoing irrigation projects in Rayalaseema and north Coastal districts, he said.

The Chief Minister directed the officials to prepare estimations for the ongoing irrigation projects in the State, besides emphasising on water and project management. In January first week, he would review the status of Polavaram works and review the onsite progress during the last week.

He also enquired about the status of Nagarjunasagar and Godavari delta and Tungabhadra modernisation works, according to a press release.
